“Portraits of Valour”  Sault Museum Exhibit

With the encouragement of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25, President Walter Wallace, a local support committee and the resources of the Federal Senior’s grant, the first 35 portraits are now complete and are the beginning of an intensely personal story. An important story to gather and share as time marches on.  These completed portraits are now on display at The Sault Ste. Marie Museum. This special exhibit will be at the Sault Museum until January 17, 2009. Please get down there and view the portraits and stories. The exhibit includes the most recent additions to the collection, as well as series one. (65 portraits in all.)

Photographer Victoria Santana and Military Historian, Rev. Phil Miller, began a journey two years ago of meeting, interviewing and photographing surviving World War II Veterans and to date have met with over sixty individuals.

The results of Series One have exceeded expectations in the finished art, as well as the honour of sharing the stories of so many who helped secure our freedom as Canadians. These portraits are also available in the 2009 Cash Calendar now in distribution

To honour the service and remember the sacrifice, what began as a portrait study has evolved into a tribute to the men and women who were part of Canada’s WW II Forces.

There has been every attempt to include all Veterans who qualify for this project, however we have not reached everyone. The next Series in progress, and we encourage family & friends to call for more information to Branch 25 at 945-8721, so that you or a family member will not miss this opportunity. We are still paying for the finishing and framing of these portraits and are looking for funding to continue the project. Anyone who wishes to donate towards completing this project may do so at the Legion.

Go to the museum and see the finished portraits.

Rob Gardner is pictured with District H Public Relations Chairmen Lorrie Kerr, at the April 4, 2009, Convention in Espanola.

Lorrie is shown presenting Rob with a Certificate of Honourable Mention, for his dedication to our Branch 25 Dispatch.

At the April 2008 Convention in Parry Sound, Rob was awarded a Plaque for the District H Bulletin Award for 2007.

The previous year, Rob received his first award for 2006/2007 for General Excellence for a Branch Bulletin for Competition B.

What Rob likes best about being the Editor of the Dispatch for Branch 25, is

” the ground work in compiling the materials for each monthly issue”.

We saw a change in the cover page this year, and it was well received, providing all the  information our members need  to contact all areas of Branch 25, and the current Executive Members and their positions, now our members know who to ask for to address their individual concerns.   Rob also has included the upcoming events on the monthly calendar for the next 2 months, what a great idea !.

We encourage everyone to inform Rob of their planned events, with as much information as possible, as soon as they can, then all of our Members know “What’s Happening” at Branch 25.
